Job Description
The position’s primary responsibility is to support in-house production research being conducted in the Santa Maria berry production region, with occasional travel to Oxnard and Salinas. The ideal candidate will be competent with field agricultural production data collection, with basic (1-2 years) production research experience in commercial strawberry field operations. This position is key for conducting fieldwork for NBG’s in-house Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. The candidate will have the ability to become familiar with key strawberry pests and pathogens, be able to work independently and efficiently, and be able to collaborate and communicate effectively with members of the research, farming and operations teams. Candidate must be comfortable working in both field and office settings. Qualified candidates will have excellent communication skills that will allow him/her to extend results fluently in Spanish, with additional basic English language competency preferred.
Duties / Responsibilities:
- Monitor fields according to NBG protocols; collect samples, review, organize and summarize field data accurately to support the IPM and other research programs
- Report data in a timely manner to Research Director and Field Research Specialist; report findings to field-level personnel as instructed
- Communicate effectively with in-house staff, and outside grower’s personnel as needed to support IPM program goals
- Work collaboratively with members of the research and other NBG teams
- Able to independently schedule work and travel plans in order to complete assigned activities in a timely and efficient manner in coordination with Field Assistant I.
- Willingness to travel between California production districts (Santa Maria, Oxnard, Watsonville-Salinas)
Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills
- Fluency in Spanish, with basic English language competency
- Enjoy working in the field on a daily basis and interacting with growers and farm employees
- Basic competency using a computer for data entry and written communication with team members (Outlook, Word, Excel), with a willingness to learn additional skills
- Experience working in agricultural production and production research desired
- Be able to work independently and proactively while maintaining a strong team perspective
- Pesticide Applicators license preferred (optional)
- Have a valid State of California Driver License
This position reports to the Field Research Manager. Driver’s license required.
Pay Range: $24 – $28 per hour
