Job Description

The Plant Breeder is responsible for maintaining and advancing the research and development programs. In addition, they will also be responsible for the Seed Production Programs which include artichoke, celery, lettuce, brassicas and any other crops necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement research methods and techniques for improving plant breeding
  • Maintain detailed records throughout the research and development cycle
  • Assist with maintaining and forecasting a budget for breeding activities
  • Develop and maintain key industry links
  • Increase program:
    • Observation trials
    • Single row trials
    • Increase blocks
    • Accurate yield data
    • Determine any serious issues
    • Full production
  • In cooperation with the Production Group, develop trial planning for all growing regions (Coachella desert region, Salinas Valley, Huron, and Oxnard of all crops as directed
  • Accurately plant trials in a timely manner
  • Accurately map all trials and distribute maps to all members of the Production Group in a timely manner
  • Monitor all trials throughout growing cycle
  • Lead in rogueing, bagging and harvest operations
  • Perform crosses to accomplish strategic goals
  • Lead small crews to accomplish necessary projects as directed
  • Assist Commodity Supervisors when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in crop science, plant genetics, or related field is required
  • Minimum of 3 years of increasing responsibility in general and breeding programs is preferred
  • Valid class “C” California Driver’s license is required and must be insurable
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred
  • Ability to travel or relocate to the Coachella Valley and drive to different areas during different seasons
  • Possess strong project management skills
  • Ability to work with and manage a high level of detailed information
  • Administer research results and make recommendations on a management level
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex problems
  • Spend time as necessary in the company’s production and growing areas: Coachella desert region and all other growing regions. Able to travel internationally to Mexico may be needed
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Communicate clearly and concisely; both orally and in writing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required, and other computer systems a plus

 

Salary Range: $77K – $95K / Yearly
