Job Description

The Head Grower is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing all aspects of row crop vegetable production—from field preparation and planting to harvesting and post-harvest handling. This leadership role ensures high yield, quality, and sustainability while managing crop schedules, field staff, input usage, and agronomic data.

Duties:

  • Develop annual and seasonal planting calendars to optimize field space and crop rotation.
  • Select appropriate vegetable varieties based on market demand, soil compatibility, and yield potential.
  • Oversee planting methods, irrigation strategies, nutrient regimes, and field operations.
  • Regularly scout and diagnose crop health, including pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies; implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols.
  • Monitor soil moisture, pH, fertility levels, and soil health tests, adjusting practices according to results.
  • Supervise equipment use (tractors, sprayers, irrigation systems) and ensure safety compliance.
  • Track yield metrics, harvest dates, and quality standards; generate forecasts to support sales/planning.
  • Maintain detailed records of crop rotations, input usage, pest/disease interventions, and field observations.
  • Analyze production data to drive continuous improvements in yield, cost efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Evaluate new vegetable varieties, cultivation techniques, and field trials in collaboration with R&D partners.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to field infrastructure, irrigation systems, or equipment to enhance productivity and environmental performance.

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Science, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in row crop vegetable production or greenhouse operations, including team management.
  • Strong agronomic knowledge: soil fertility, irrigation, pest/disease control, crop rotation.
  • Familiarity with IPM practices and safe chemical handling standards.
  • Proficiency with farm equipment, irrigation systems, and agronomic data tools.
  • Proven leadership in training and managing field crews under flexible schedules.
  • Excellent communication abilities, with capability to work in bilingual settings if applicable.
  • Organized, solution-oriented, adaptable to changing seasons and conditions.

 

Physical Capability & Working Conditions:

  • Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather,-performing physical tasks: lifting ~50 lb, stooping, standing, etc.
  • Willingness to work some early mornings, evenings, or weekends during critical operations.

 

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $110,000.00 – $150,000.00 per year
